A commisison from 
This piece shows a painfull moment for Maria and Lara, as well as how they both handle it.
As you can see, Lara has been severely damaged in battle, she can still function, but she evidently cannot walk, her right foot has been ground into scrap and her left let has been blown off at the knee, the knee joint itself all but destroyed.
Maria is a damn good mechanic, but certain things are beyond her, creating a new cutting edge robotic knee or foot from scratch is one of them, it isn't the same as reattaching a cleanly severed limb midway up the forearm as she has had to do once before, and her efforts to cobble together something functional from the blasted remains of the joints has come to naught, and so she is beginning to lose herself ot despair, unable to help her closest friend, unable to even maintain the illusion that she's just fine, that she's as human as she used to be when exposed fried wires are quite telling of that lie.
Lara on the other hand just doesn't want to see Maria cry, she is very much bothered by the fact that she's missing limbs, but since they aren't dangerous wounds to her she feels curiously detached, she hopes that they can see a robotics specialist to replace the limbs but she can live with feeling inhuman and crippled for a while if Maria can just be her rock, so she does all she can to give Maria her strength, so they can both make it through.

Reminds me of a scene from an anime I saw as a kid...
Robot maid is damaged, shut down, and sent to be melted down, without her master and/or best friend being told or asked.
Master and/or best friend finds out before the maid is smelted down.
She gets together a group of friends- all of whom were also close to the maid- and they go to the smelting factory.
They do all they can to stop the process- up to and including destroying much of the smelting machinery, to halt the process before it started.
But they were seconds too late, and the maid falls into the smelting pit right before the conveyor belt carrying her to her doom is stopped.
-Insert all the main characters collectively flipping their shit-
Never seen that anime before, and I never watched it after, but DAMN, that f*cked me UP. I was, like, six. Seeing a character die like that left an impact on me, as is evident from the fact that I still remember it. Maaaaaan, that made me so sad. :c
